IBM unveils Project Vulcan to manage personal information overload

Allows developers to create new generations of apps powered by collaboration

IBM has unveiled Project Vulcan, which is designed to exploit the convergence of cloud and on-premise systems; collaborative services business applications and social networks; and desktops, netbooks and mobile devices.

The company claims that the Project Vulcan enables new approaches to reduce personal information overload and improve business agility.

IBM said that the Project Vulcan aims at creating next generation collaboration systems. Social analytics, initiated by IBM Research will be used to reduce the growing problem of personal information overload by providing recommendations to locate expertise, relevant content and critical business events.

Designed as a loosely coupled architecture, it will work with existing open systems and provide flexibility and responsiveness to changing business requirements and personal preferences. The Project Vulcan is designed to allow developers create new generations of applications powered by collaboration, the company said.

IBM said that the capabilities of Project Vulcan will be delivered in future releases of products such as LotusLive, Lotus Notes and Domino, Lotus Connections, Quickr and WebSphere Portal. The company plans to deliver a beta of a development environment in the second half of 2010 on LotusLive Labs.
